Nearly 75% of teenagers in the U.S. receive

treatment for a mental health problem through a school-
based program. Identifying teenagers at risk for mental health problems, early intervention, and treating those with mental disorders improves the teenagers functioning and lowers the individual family, educational, social and financial costs to teenagers, families, schools, and communities.

It is important for the well-being of teenagers that their teachers feel comfortable knowing when to refer students at risk to school-based and community behavioral health and primary care providers as well as school-based service providers, and to coordinate these services with educational services.
